There has been a lot of activity lately on Twitter following the Barcelona World Mobile Conference and in the blogosphere, focusing on the power of apps. Some of the most interesting points come from Zokem – a leading mobile analytics company based in the US – who argue that the usability of the app and availability is why it is still leading the way in mobile developments.
However, in spite of their popularity, apps usage drops off very quickly:

These statistics are for the UK but it is highly likely that they are just as relevant in many other parts of the world. The more apps a user downloads, the more cluttered his/her phone will become and then in order to use it, they will have to search through their phone. Mobile web, however, is accessible all the time and only requires you to start-up your browser. Which is easier? You decide.
The Non Techie Overview
The Application
An app is built specifically for the smart phone where it is installed and designed to access the functionality provided by the phones software.
Generically speaking you have to build a specific application for each device therefore for the smaller company the cost is prohibitive.
The Mobile Web
Is a specialist website that can be viewed in any mobile browser. The site is designed to provide a mobile enhanced experience for the end-user but can’t access the phones software .
Generically speaking you have to build a single mobile site utilising the content from your existing web site therefore for the smaller company the cost is greatly reduced.
